The UW Cancer Center at Johnson Creek gives southeastern Wisconsin residents local access to leading-edge research and treatments offered by the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center in Madison, WI. Virtually all types of cancer are treated at the new center, which offers medical and radiation oncology services, chemotherapy treatments, and clinical trials. Special Design Feature The team aimed to create a warm, inviting, and supportive patient-friendly environment - all enhanced by a rustic, natural setting. OWP/P designed the building to fit seamlessly into the landscape. The space is inspired by elements found in rural architecture (metal roofs, post and beam construction, brick, and split-faced concrete block). The pastoral surroundings demanded scenic views from the inside out. Ample use of glass allows visual access to the woodlands for patients, families, and staff. Design/Construction Challenge Construction costs for a cancer center project of a similar size and configuration built in the region over a 5-year period have ranged between $210 and $230 per square foot. The UW project had a budget based upon $182 per square foot. The design team creatively employed utilitarian materials like brick, split-face concrete block, steel, wood, and glass to meet programmatic and budget requirements yet still create a nurturing, light-filled space.
