Washington, D.C. – In order to assist consumers in the architectural design process and the considerations involved in selecting and working with an architect, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has launched a new online resource: http://howdesignworks.aia.org.
The site incorporates streaming videos which depict the design process—both institutional and residential—from the initial discussion with an architect through the final product, with simple tips on how to select an architect and the most important questions to ask. To ensure that homeowner's best interests are protected, the site also includes information about selecting the AIA Contract Documents that are best suited for residential projects.
Given the rise of energy costs and concern over the impact that construction activity has on the environment, there has been an increase in the use of energy efficient design principles, nationwide. HowDesignWorks.aia.org addresses sustainable building practices, focusing on energy efficient design strategies.
For example, included on the site is an online video case study featuring an AIA architect based in Minneapolis, MN, who helps her client define environmental practices in building a new home. Together, they incorporate Kyoto Protocol standards into the structure, creating a more energy efficient living space.
"Hiring an architect shouldn't be an overwhelming process, but there are a number of important issues for clients to consider," says Christine McEntee, AIA executive vice-president and CEO. "Whether someone is renovating their home to incorporate design elements that save electricity, or is building a first home, our goal is to clearly outline how working with an architect from the first stages of a project is essential."
In addition, visitors to the site will also get an insider's look into how schools across the country are using elements of sustainable design in order to create healthier learning environments for students. The Web site features video footage of how an abandoned laundry building in Jersey City, NJ, was turned into a vibrant new high school.
HowDesignWorks.aia.org also includes the following resources:
- Local architect finder
- Fact sheets on a variety of topics including how to select an architect as well as what questions to ask to ensure success
- Frequently asked questions
- Information about selecting contracts that are best suited for residential projects
HowDesignWorks.aia.org details the key stages of design to give users an understanding that will ultimately enhance the relationship between the customer and the architect.
