New Wing for Scarsdale School
Construction of the new wing for the Quaker Ridge Elementary School, one of the five public primary schools in Scarsdale, NY, is complete. The architect is Peter Gisolfi Associates of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, the firm which has designed many key projects for Scarsdale's elementary, middle, and high schools. The construction budget for the project was $11.2 million.
The school's new two-story wing replaces a deteriorating one-story wing built in 1947, nearly all of which was demolished. The cheerful, day-lit space creates a welcoming main entrance adjacent to a clocktower, which is also a stair and elevator tower. The wing also houses new administration offices, a teachers' workroom, a multipurpose activities room, a renovated gymnasium, and 10 new classrooms -- two more than the eight classrooms that were demolished. The new classroom wing and a connector space now join other sections of the school, built in the 1950s. Stylistically, the new construction bridges the gap between the traditional design of the original building and the more modern style of the later additions.
One of the architectural themes incorporated into the new plan is a graceful connection between the building and its setting, an approach associated with the Peter Gisolfi Associates firm of architects, landscape architects, and interior architects. For the Quaker Ridge project, the architects designed the new spaces around a central courtyard that is faced by the classrooms, the new addition to the library, and a corridor to link the new areas.
The construction manager for the project is JMOA Engineering of Pleasantville, NY. Spiegel Zamecnik & Shah of New Haven, CT, are the structural engineers; O'Dea Lynch Abbattista of Hawthorne, NY, are the MEP engineers.
