LEEDing the Way

Washington, D.C. – The LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Existing Buildings pilot program, established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), reports record levels of participation, and is the largest pilot of a LEED product due to market demand in USGBC history. “The response we received from the marketplace is very exciting,” says Michael Arny, chairman of the LEED EB committee and president of Leonardo Academy. “It shows that building owners and managers want to use LEED EB to benchmark the continuous operation of their buildings in an environmentally sustainable way, as much as [project] teams want to build green using LEED NB [LEED 2.0 for New Construction and Major Renovations].”

Comprising more than 17 million square feet of floorspace, 65 buildings representing 51 companies and organizations have been selected for participation. The LEED EB program will focus exclusively on building upgrades and building operations. For more information about LEED or the USGBC, visit (www.usgbc.org).

Historic Downtown Welcomes New Development

Chula Vista, CA – The highly anticipated Gateway Chula Vista business and retail center finished construction on Phase I in June 2002, and construction is planned on the second of the three-phase project soon. The $80 million, multi-use commercial complex is a joint project of Gateway Chula Vista LLC, a collaboration of experienced real estate developers, and the City of Chula Vista’s Redevelopment Agency. When completed the complex will be 346,000 square feet.

The first phase of the complex features 102,259 rentable square feet of office and retail space, and offers all the modern amenities of Class A buildings: high-speed fiber optic Internet access, superior security, and professional on-site management and concierge services. This is the first major development in the city’s historic downtown in almost 20 years. For more information on Gateway Chula Vista, visit (www.mountainwestre.com).
