The EPA has issued a plan for establishing greenhouse gas pollution standards under the Clean Air Act for 2011. These standards will focus on fossil fuel power plants and petroleum refineries – sources that represent almost 40% of greenhouse gas pollution in the U.S.
“We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution that threatens the health and welfare of Americans, and contributes to climate change,” Administrator Lisa Jackson says. “These standards will help American companies attract private investment to the clean energy upgrades that make our companies more competitive and create good jobs here at home.”
Proposal standards for power plants are scheduled for July 2011, refineries for December 2011, with final standards expected to be in place in May 2012 and November 2012, respectively.
Under the Clean Air Act, New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) will set the level of pollution that facilities may emit.
