LAS VEGAS—The winners of the second annual hospitality carpet design contest from Durkan, the hospitality brand of The Mohawk Group, have been named. Durkan unveiled the prized patterns from its second annual D*SCOVER competition at HD Expo 2011. Presented in partnership with the Network of the Hospitality Industry (NEHW), D*SCOVER spotlights talent among professionals and emerging designers alike. Grand prizes were awarded to one design professional and one student. Proceeds from D*SCOVER designs sales will contribute to NEWH’s ENDOW scholarship program.
In the professional category, Detroit native Amy Bos, an interior designer with Kraemer Design Group, took the prize for her Italian Riviera-inspired submission. With a hike during a trip to Italy as her muse, Bos created a carpet design that is rich in bold color and texturally vibrant. Patterns for ballrooms, corridors, meeting spaces and borders evoke the rippling Mediterranean waters and indulgent spirit of the Italian coast. In addition to showing her designs at HD Expo, Bos won a cash prize and will have her designs featured in Durkan’s product catalogs.
George Washington University junior Yau Cheung, the student winner, comes to interior design by way of biochemistry. He unexpectedly changed his course of study after an internship with a furniture company where he became hooked on the creative aspect of design. Cheung’s experiences in Japan fueled his winning carpet submission, as he converted his feelings for the country into a stunning design that captures the “Land of the Rising Sun.” Intricate medallion patterns and a striking red and gold color palette combine to create an atmosphere of Asian opulence. As the grand prize student winner, Cheung received a $2,000 Durkan scholarship.
“Our judging panel was ‘floored’ with the talent and creativity exhibited by our D*SCOVER applicants,” says Barbara Marcy, director of creative design for Durkan. “Choosing our finalists was not an easy task, as we reviewed almost twice the submissions as last year. The winners truly pushed the limits of design—something we strive to do every day at Durkan.”
All D*SCOVER submissions were evaluated on concept, presentation and market feasibility by a panel of industry professionals including: Jana Schiowitz, products editor for Hospitality Design; Trisha Poole, IIDA, vice president of marketing for NEWH Executive Committee, and president of Design Poole Inc; Helen L. Reed, president of NEWH; and Barbara Marcy, Durkan’s own creative design director.
Bos’ and Cheung’s prizewinning designs will join last year’s D*SCOVER designs as part of Durkan’s growing collective of patterns that benefit NEWH’s ENDOW scholarship program. As one of the first companies to commit to ENDOW, Durkan continues to lead support of programs that contribute to the talent of young professionals entering the hospitality industry. When designers select any of the patterns from Durkan’s ENDOW collective of patterns, a portion of the sale will go to the scholarship fund.
