Pave the Way for Carbon-Neutral Cement

09/14/2011 |

Recent advances have lead to the discovery of cement that reduces its CO2 footprint.

What if the cement for your building, sidewalks, and parking lots could neutralize carbon instead of emitting it? When it comes to carbon dioxide, cement production accounts for 5% of global emissions, and the demand has continued to increase in recent years. Novacem developed cement that absorbs more carbon during production than is emitted to manufacture it.

By using magnesium oxide, carbonates are heated at lower temperatures than regular cement. The use of magnesium silicates eliminates CO2 from processing raw materials – the carbonates actually absorb CO2. One ton of this cement neutralizes up to 220 pounds more CO2 than it emits.
