DENVER – The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the organization that defines, teaches, and promotes best practices in design-build, awarded Fentress Architects and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. an Honor Award for Alaska Airlines LAX Terminal 6 Renovation in the category of Rehabilitation/Renovation/Restoration. Additionally, DBIA gave the design team a Merit Award for the Military Department (MILDEP) Investigative Agencies Headquarters in the Civic Category. Fentress Architects was selected from more than 100 entries submitted from firms across the nation.

“It’s an honor to accept these awards from our peers. The team feels rewarded for their years of hard work on these highly complex projects,” says Mike Winters, design principal with Fentress Architects.

The $238-million Alaska Airlines LAX Terminal 6 renovation was extremely challenging. The 50-year-old facility had, over many decades, undergone continuous, undocumented alterations prompting the need for the major renovation. It was Alaska Airline’s vision to incorporate a new and innovative concept into the terminal in order to expedite and enhance the passenger experience.

The Military Department (MILDEP) Investigative Headquarters is located on an 80-acre site on the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. The new headquarters provides 718,850 square feet of Class A office space for five military investigative agencies, composed of 2,400 military and civilian employees. Designed and built with sustainability in mind, this project has achieved LEED® NC 2.0 – New Commercial Construction Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
