ASID Preparing for 2013

As we near the end of 2012, I wonder, as many of you might, where the year went? It seems that our lives have become increasingly complex and fast-paced due to the challenges of work-life balance and shifts in the market that require higher levels of competency, 24/7 accountability, and multitasking as fundamental elements of success.

The need for increased knowledge and information sharing, technology, innovation and collaboration permeates our world. The adage that “time flies” is nothing short of an understatement, considering the scope of work that encompasses a day in the life of designers today!

Famous composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein once said, “To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.” At ASID, we have worked hard to maximize both aspects. First, through the adoption of a dynamic strategic plan that guides our decision-making processes and second, by dedicating time and resources to accomplish our goals.

Our strategic plan is the timepiece that keeps things moving as we focus on the future through timely decision-making, strategic initiatives and open collaboration. We look to position ourselves in multiple venues that reach a broad spectrum of the industry while addressing members’ needs.

As part of our vision for the future, we continue to support several programs that have significant impacts in reaching emerging professionals and those soon entering the field, including GO PRO and RealWorld DesignWeek.

We are also in the beginning stages of a leadership development program that will provide the tools and skills needed for continued success in the market. As part of this initiative, we have partnered with Dwell Media and The 1% program of Public Architecture to bring our members even greater access to industry-leading programs and events.

Moreover, our research agenda continues to move forward through connection with the ASID Foundation and others who are committed to advancing the profession by communicating the impact of interior design.

These and other ongoing initiatives are energizing our society and the profession. We are excited about our future as an organization and as design professionals!

Looking at the year in review, it’s important to consider this brief snapshot of ASID. We have and will continue to focus on our members, develop our leaders and advance the profession through these and other efforts. Building on existing relationships, expanding collaborative opportunities and developing innovative strategies to communicate the impact of interior design will be key drivers for the future. As leadership guru Peter Drucker once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Here’s to a bright and prosperous 2013 for the interior design profession!
