Published reports show HCA owns nearly 180 acute care, general, and psychiatric hospitals, as well as 78 freestanding ambulatory surgery centers. Numbers provided by HCA in the Buildings’ questionnaire say the company has more than 300 total buildings in its system, totaling 66 million square feet*. The dollar volume of spending in 2003 for Capital Expenditures is estimated to be around $1 billion* with New Construction of about 1.4 million square feet* and Modernization projects equaling more than 800,000 square feet* in 2003.
Kaiser Permanente (53.77)
Kaiser Permanente, America’s largest not-for-profit healthcare organization, services 8.1 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Today’s company comprises Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc.; Kaiser Foundation Hospitals; and the Permanente Medical Groups. According to the company’s website, Kaiser operates 29 medical centers and 423 medical offices in California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia. The company reports a total of nearly 53.8 million square feet of occupied space nationwide, according to statistics provided by the company.

As one of the country’s top for-profit healthcare providers – with 6 million members in 18 states and Puerto Rico – Humana delivers most of its service through HMOs and PPOs; provides dental, group life, and disability insurance; and delivers healthcare coverage to military personnel and their families through its TRICARE unit.
