Inspired by the artistic challenge of representing a block of ice in an abstract way and his client’s desire to create a more contemplative space in the city, architect Miguel Marques Venâncio and his team from MMVArquitecto have created a bold and modern dental clinic in Torres Vedras, Portugal that “vibrates like the cadency of the rhythms of nature.”

The design encases the reception area, waiting area and three surgery rooms in recycled glass panels of different colors, thicknesses and qualities, which “potentiates the reflections and the vibrations of the light by creating a perception of space that is constantly mutating,” according to Venâncio. He notes that the panels forming the glass walls are supported only by leaning on each other. For the glass doors to the surgery rooms, colored panels of the same thickness create a movable surface while matching the other materials.

The walls and ceilings in the office are paneled in white laminated wood, while the soft seating in the office’s waiting area is covered with white leather, giving the perception of a block of ice that has been excavated in a sculptural way. Colorful screens aside, the exam chairs and stools in the surgery rooms provide the sole splashes of color in the office interior.
