Jasper, IN – Indiana Furniture has achieved the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association’s (BIFMA) level 2 certification for all of its casegoods, tables and seating products.
“Indiana Furniture prides itself on doing things right and for the right reasons,” says Bret Ackerman, president of Indiana Furniture. “Meeting level 2 of the BIFMA all-encompassing standard for sustainability for all products fell in line with our environmental goals and philosophy of continuous improvement.”
Casegoods from Indiana Furniture were previously level 2 certified while seating was level 1. After achieving FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification in 2012, BIFMA level 2 became an easier target for all products. The company also added methods to monitor and control water usage in the manufacturing facility, formalized a chemical management plan of action for emergency response, and converted up to 20 percent of the energy used in the manufacturing facility to green certified renewable energy.
level® is the multi-attribute sustainability standard for the furniture industry. It was created to deliver the most transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of furniture products in the built environment. Using multiple perspectives, it takes into account a company’s social actions, energy usage, material selection, and human and ecosystem health impacts. Indiana Furniture utilized the third-party certifier Intertek to verify it had met requirements for level 2.
