Dow Corning Marks its 60th Anniversary Year With Continued Innovations and New Partnerships

Midland, MI — As Dow Corning Corp. marks its 60th year in business this month, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary E. Anderson attributed the company’s 60 years of success and longevity to its ability to continually innovate and find ways to address an ever-broadening range of customers’ needs.

"Sixty years is a notable milestone, particularly in light of the way we have ‘reinvented’ ourselves, transforming Dow Corning from a product-focused supplier to a solutions company that is organized around the needs of customers,” Anderson said. “With the full involvement and support of our employees, we have implemented sweeping changes that have transformed the company into a successful, solutions-based enterprise.”

The milestone has been recognized by community and state elected officials, including Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and State Senator Mike Goschka, who have both issued commendations on behalf of the State of Michigan.

Anniversary activities are taking place at all company sites worldwide from September through the end of the year.

Building on its tradition of technology leadership, Dow Corning continues to explore exciting new frontiers of silicon science and to invest in innovation. On an annual basis, the company invests about six percent of sales in R&D, which is among the highest research funding commitments in the industry. For example:

  • Working with Michelin, Dow Corning is supporting the development of green tires that reduce fuel consumption and protect the environment.
  • For the semiconductor industry, Dow Corning is a leading supplier of silicone for computer chips and many new coatings that its scientists developed to protect and increase the chips’ power and speed.
  • It is a leading supplier of materials for fiber-optic coatings for Corning, Inc. and for others in that industry.

Dow Corning has made it a point to be innovative both in business practices and in partnerships and business models, in order to address evolving customer needs. Some examples:

  • The company established a new web-enabled business model, called Xiameter™, that offers high-volume customers the lowest base prices in the industry for commonly used silicones.
  • A strategic alliance with Genencor International has resulted in the creation of a proprietary Silicon Biotechnology™ platform that will help develop low-energy, high-efficiency, bio-based processes for the production of novel, highly marketable silicon-based solutions.
