WaterSense Label Now For Commercial Kitchens

 
This water-saving product comes from EPA’s WaterSense, which has finalized its first specification for a commercial kitchen product – a pre-rinse spray valve.

Do you own or operate a building that contains a commercial kitchen?

If so, you may be able to lessen the amount of water you use on rinsing dishes – and according to the EPA – it’s a lot. The group estimates that approximately 51 billion gallons of water is used every year to rinse dishes by almost one million American food service establishments.

EPA's WaterSense has finalized its first specification for a commercial kitchen product – a pre-rinse spray valve. If a valve earns the certification, the money-saving product will be easily identified by a WaterSense label.

“Pre-rinse spray valves can account for nearly one-third of the water used in a typical commercial kitchen,” said Veronica Blette, chief of EPA’s WaterSense Branch. “Replacing just one of these fixtures with a WaterSense-labeled model can save a typical restaurant more than 7,000 gallons of water per year—the amount of water needed to wash nearly 5,000 racks of dishes.”

A restaurant that replaces one pre-rinse spray valve with a WaterSense-labeled model could recoup its investment in four to eight months and save more than $115 per year on water and energy costs, depending on how its water is heated.
