Coca-Cola Launches First Electric Refrigerated Trucks

Your beverages may soon come with a lower carbon footprint

 

The electric fleet supports the company’s goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its products by 25% by 2020. Coca-Cola also aims to improve its manufacturing processes, packaging, and ingredient sourcing.

If your building receives shipments from Coca-Cola, your beverages may soon come with a lower carbon footprint.

Coca-Cola is set to deploy more than 30 alternative fuel vehicles in select cities throughout the U.S. by the end of 2013. The company's alternative fuel fleet includes hybrid electric, liquid natural gas, and compressed natural gas vehicles. All of Coca-Cola's alternative vehicles will reduce emissions equivalent to removing 10,000 cars from the road annually.

Sixteen of those alternative fuel vehicles are refrigerated plug-in electric trucks, which will transport Odwalla beverages in San Francisco's Bay Area. The first-of-its-kind vehicle produces zero tailpipe emissions and will eliminate fuel usage by about 90 gallons per week.

"Coca-Cola is intently focused on our environmental commitments," says Rich Frazier, chief product supply office for Coca-Cola Refreshments. "One of the many ways we are delivering on this is by operating the largest heavy-duty hybrid electric fleet in North America."

Not a California resident? You may still see one of these refrigerated electric trucks in your neighborhood. By the end of the year, Coca-Cola will launch 15 additional alternative fuel vehicles to service other cities, including Chicago and Dallas.
