Health Center Revitalizes Mill

An adaptive reuse of a 120-year-old granite mill building, this fitness center preserves the existing clerestory windows, heavy timber construction, and exposed interior stone and brick walls. The 18,000-square-foot space includes 28 exam rooms, an up to 100-person conference room, and spaces for clinical and administrative staff.

The basement was converted to the mechanical room, allowing for full build-out of the upper levels. A large community room – with a full teaching kitchen, an attached exam room, and teleconferences capabilities – can serve as a classroom, staff fitness area, or as multiple meeting spaces when subdivided into smaller rooms.

Center Offers Multiple Services

This site combines an independent fitness business accessible to the community with a rehabilitation and therapy center that is part of the connected hospital. To meet these unique goals, a large warehouse was converted. It was imperative that both locations establish and retain their own identities.

The fitness center includes a 1/10th mile oval track, a 25-meter lap pool, and a full locker room. The rehabilitation area features classrooms for training employees and a 100-seat meeting room available to the public. These spaces are equipped with audio-visual equipment, motorized screens, overhead projection, and surround sound.
