Better Building Challenge Grows by 1 Billion Square Feet

Its Neighborhood Program has also helped upgrade more than 100,000 buildings

Slated to save approximately $100 million this year, the Better Buildings Challenge partners now include over 1 billion square feet of building space, according to the DOE.

“Whether it’s investing in new technology or implementing rewards programs with employees, Better Buildings partners are not only creating cutting-edge approaches to energy efficiency, but they are also sharing their successes with the marketplace,” says Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.

New partners include:

  • General Motors – 31 plants covering 84 million square feet.
  • Hilton Worldwide – its company-owned portfolio of 14 million square feet.
  • MGM Resorts International – 78 million square feet.
  • City of San Diego, CA – 9.5 million square feet.
  • Towson University – 5.5 million square feet campus-wide.
  • University of Virginia – 15 million square feet.
  • Walmart – 850 million square feet.
  • Whole Foods Market – close to 13 million square feet.

The Better Buildings Challenge commits to make commercial and industrial buildings 20% more energy efficient over the next 10 years and accelerate private sector investment in energy efficiency.

In similar expansion, the Better Buildings Neighborhood Program has helped more than 40 state and local governments upgrade more than 100,000 buildings, saving businesses and families over $730 million on utility bills.

Local direct investments and savings will continue to grow as leveraged funds are used to finance future energy efficiency project upgrades.
