Shining a Light on Photoluminescent Sign Approvals

Contributors: James Earl

Photoluminescent materials are becoming increasingly popular for use in emergency and exit signs due to advances in materials and performance. When the lights go out, photoluminescent signage shines brightly for an extended period so people can safely exit the building – at least that’s how they’re supposed to work.

Because these products are used in emergency situations, performance standards have been developed by organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). When considering photoluminescent signs for your facility, it’s important to make sure the products you are purchasing comform to these standards.

According to Milwaukee-based Brady Corp., another way to verify a product performs as expected is through the International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES). This non-profit group provides independent evaluations of products to ensure they comply with building codes.

This information was provided by Brady Corp., an international manufacturer and marketer of complete identification solutions and specialty materials, including BradyGlo photoluminescent signs.
