Atlanta /PRNewswire/ – The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) congratulates, Chi Phuong Hoang, winner of the 2006 Ken Dillon Memorial Fellowship for Indoor Environmental Quality Design.
GEI will award Hoang a $3,500 fellowship for her proposed study, in line with the fellowship goal of a project on indoor environments with a focus on indoor air quality and its effect on health and/or productivity.
"We were very impressed by Chi's proposed study and look forward to the results contributing to the body of knowledge regarding indoor air quality," says Carl Smith, GEI CEO. "It is visionaries like Ken Dillon and students like Chi Phuong Hoang that will lead the way to healthier indoor environments where people can live and work productively."
Hoang is a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Energy & Environmental Resources. Hoang's project proposal, a study of the chemistry of green building materials, will look at the "secondary emissions" of green building products and impact on human health. Secondary emissions are generated when a product reacts with other product chemicals in the environment, often creating harmful ozone. Ozone reaction from indoor materials can persist for months, even years, irritating and possibly harming building occupants. The results from analyzing secondary emissions from green building materials will be compared with previous research on conventional materials.
GEI's Ken Dillon Memorial Fellowship for Indoor Environmental Quality Design was awarded in honor of the life work of Dr. Henry Kenneth Dillon, a founding member of the GEI Advisory Board and associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
In addition to the contribution of GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, this scholarship was generously funded by CertainTeed Corp., Knoll Inc., Knauf Insulation, and Owens Corning. Look for their GREENGUARD Certified Products™ at www.greenguard.org.
GEI will again seek student applicants interested in multidisciplinary study of the relationship between indoor air quality and public health in building design and construction in 2007. Applications for GREENGUARD's Ken Dillon Memorial Fellowship will be available on the GREENGUARD Web site in spring of 2007, or interested students may send an e-mail request to email@example.com. Applications for the 2007 fellowship will be accepted until October 1, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The winning project proposal will be announced at the 2007 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo.
