At a conference to debate the challenges of tall buildings, an RMJM architect touted the technology and sustainability of the 396-meter-tall Gazprom headquarters in St. Petersburg, Russia. Features include an energy solution that minimizes the need for heat and a tower with double-glazed glass skins with an atrium that acts as a buffer zone.

Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art and Architecture uses parallel perspective spaces and garden walls in black-rimmed earth over which a light “figure” hovers. Sustainable features include geothermal cooling and heating and low-embodied-energy materials.
