The goal of this project was to create a new home for the St. Philip's Academy's students and staff. Complete interior demolition and renovation of an existing 56,000-square-foot facility was necessary, and a 4-story addition and single-story gymnasium were constructed. The new complex includes classrooms, a cafeteria and kitchen, offices, and a gym.

Special Design Elements
The project was designed with environmental awareness. LEED Silver certification was kept in mind throughout the design and construction of the building. Special emphasis was put on purchasing sustainable materials and site recycling. Sustainable features and LEED measures include an energy-efficient heating and cooling system; radiant floor heating; a vegetated roof; low-flow toilets, showerheads, faucets, and kitchen equipment; low-VOC finishes; exterior lighting that adheres to light-pollution guidelines; and the use of lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Design/Construction Challenges
An aggressive schedule (only 12 months) and a tight budget were the main project challenges. By working continuously through the winter, the project team was able to catch up with construction activities and finish the project on time. During the design stage, continual redesigns were proposed to reduce the overall budget, both to save money for the school and to pay for the costs associated with renovating a building that is more than 100 years old.
