Hotel At Galleria Development in Cambridge

Construction is under way on an eight-story, 236-room luxury hotel.

Construction is under way on CambridgeSide Hotel, an eight-story, 236-room luxury hotel and destination restaurant adjacent to the CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge, MA. Atlanta-based Hardin Capital is the developer of the $61 million project, which is scheduled for completion in March 2003. The project is one of the few hotel developments going forward at a time when the economy has evoked caution in the industry.

Arrowstreet Inc., the Somerville, MA-based full-service architectural design firm that won worldwide acclaim for its design of the CambridgeSide Galleria, is the project architect. The hotel and restaurant will be managed by the Kimpton Group, owner/operator of upscale West Coast and Midwest hotels, which is expanding its portfolio to include locations within the East Coast.

The hotel is connected to the CambridgeSide Galleria, providing guests with easy access to the 700,000-square-foot shopping facility. The entrance will feature a circular, European-style courtyard, and the exterior will echo the Cambridge architectural theme of red bricks and cast stone. Rooms overlook the Lechmere Canal, the Charles River, and the Espalanade.

Excellent Care in Healthcare Design and Operation

Genesis Health System, Davenport, IA, is increasing patient convenience and improving healthcare professionals’ schedules by undertaking simultaneous expansion of inpatient care with four additional cath labs and a new free-standing Heart Institute. The new building joins the hospital via a glass-walled walkway, allowing easy access for physicians and staff.

By uniting many aspects of heart care in a single facility, Genesis knew that patients would benefit immensely from convenience and continuity.

The design team spent seven months with doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators to create an approachable, beautiful building that houses state-of-the-art technology for diagnosis and treatment. Since patients and providers expect high tech but neither wants a facility that feels cold, the designers softened the technology. An environment was created where patients feel comfortable – not threatened or overwhelmed. The Heart Institute uses many design elements like light, color, and spatial relationships to create an atmosphere that promotes well-being and optimism, helping patients and their families focus on healing.

Welcoming patients and reducing stress begins with making it simple to find the Heart Institute, especially for patients from out of town. The three-story glass lobby gives patients entering the center a glimpse of the facility’s warm and comfortable interior space, easing patient anxiety.

This striking lobby, with glass on one side and brick facing on the opposite wall, creates a dramatic but peaceful space, transitioning patients between the outdoors and the treatment areas. Every aspect of this building, from its location on campus to the colors on the walls, focuses on implementing a healing design and promoting medical excellence.
