Damage Around Lintels

Another clue is damage around lintels. In this case, the unprotected steel lintel above an air conditioning unit has rusted and expanded, thus lifting the wall, cracking the masonry, and presenting paths for moisture and air.

“There is potential for condensation if humidified interior air goes out or if you’re pulling humid outdoor air inside,” says Stephane Hoffman, principal at engineering firm Morrison Hershfield.

It is important to perform periodic inspections – at the changing of seasons or at least twice per year – to look for insidious problems.
