GSA Names 1st Chief Greening Officer

Eleni Reed was selected as the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) first Chief Greening Officer this week.  The position will lead GSA in “aggressively pursuing innovative sustainable practices” within over 10,000 owned and leased government buildings.  The appointment was in response to President Barack Obama’s executive order calling for leadership from the federal government in sustainability. 

Many government buildings are in need of greening and modernizing, a task Reed will direct.  “Eleni Reed's role as Chief Greening Officer is central to building a sustainable, better performing portfolio as GSA strives to meet its commitment of achieving a zero environmental footprint … Her unparalleled work in sustainability and green buildings will help drive GSA's efforts to be a green proving ground and a market-maker for state-of-the art and emerging technologies,” commented GSA Commissioner of Public Buildings Robert A. Peck.

Reed holds a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Urban Planning and a LEED-Accredited professional and certified planner.  Previously, she was the Director of Sustainability Strategies with Cushman and Wakefield’s Client Solutions Group, assisted the City of New York’s Mayor’s Office of Operations with the Green Buildings Standards Law, and is currently serving on the US Green Buildings Council’s National Education Events Committee.

Walmart has announced that it will conduct in-depth safety inspections at 100% of the factories in Bangladesh that produce goods for the retailer. The company will complete all reviews within six months and will publicly release the names and inspection information on all 279 factories. As a result, workers in these facilities can be assured of safer working conditions, and the entire market will be lifted to a new standard.
