HLW and Sciame Complete Major Post 9-11 Lower Manhattan Revitalization Project

Firms Successfully Design and Build State-of-the-art New Millennium High School

New York City-based HLW, a leading 118-year old architecture, engineering and consulting firm, announced today that it has completed the design and build of the new Millennium High School, one of the first components of Governor George Pataki's plan for the revitalization of post 9-11 downtown Manhattan. As part of the plan, HLW was commissioned to provide services including design/build, interior architecture, engineering & lighting design.  F.J. Sciame Construction Co., Inc., New York City, performed Construction Management services for the school's 100,000 square-foot new home at 75 Broad Street.

Working under the constraints of a 6-week design schedule and an 8-week construction schedule for the first phase of the project, HLW partnered with Sciame to build a new entrance lobby and 13th floor.  This first phase accommodates 250 ninth and tenth graders for Fall 2003. The second phase of the project will be the design and construction of the remaining facilities for the entering classes of 2004.

"HLW is excited to be collaborating with the city on such an important piece of Governor Pataki's plan for downtown New York," commented Vivian Chavez, president, HLW Design/Build, New York City.  "Our design/build approach provides a completely design-led process which ensures that the project will be finished on schedule and on budget, and that the design will provide an innovative approach to learning. This is virtually the only way to deliver a project with such a compressed schedule on time."

The new Millennium School represents HLW's approach to creating schools whose environments are a direct response to the best in learning theory. The school provides flexibility that accommodates project-based learning and portfolio-based assessment.  By applying lessons learned in the private sector to public school projects, HLW is able to design schools that better integrate learning and facilities.

"Our comprehensive understanding of the creation of space for learning organizations allows us to bring the best private sector thinking to educational facilities planning and design," said Peter Bachmann, partner-in-charge, Education practice, HLW, New York City.
