New Yahoo! Data Center Equipped with Innovative Living Wall

The facility is designed to use 40% less energy and 95% less water than traditional structures

Technology company Yahoo! chose a G-O2 Living Wall by Plant Connection, Inc. for its newest data center.

The 155,000-square-foot facility, located in Lockport, NY, is designed to use 40% less energy and 95% less water (comparable to saving 36 million gallons of water per year) than traditional facilities. The air-cooled data center is also able to accommodate 50,000 servers.

Specified as the “Yahoo! Commuting Coop” (Y!CC), the building is elongated and narrow to provide efficient air circulation, mimicking the traditional chicken coop. The 120’ x 60’ building design makes the most of the flow of outside air for cooling instead of using conventional, less-power efficient mechanical chillers.

Yahoo! hopes this addition will make waves in the tech community. Plant Connection asserts that Yahoo!’s selection of a green wall to greet visitors and employees is a bold statement that the company is being environmentally conscious and progressively looking forward to the future of green energy.
