RehydrateUS Aims to Conserve 1 Billion Gallons a Day

The RehydrateUS Initiative, which was launched Tuesday at Greenbuild in Phoenix, urges home and business owners to reduce their water consumption with 3 easy steps

Melaver Inc.’s sustainability guru Tommy Linstroth has introduced a plan that could reduce water consumption across the country by 1 billion gallons per day. The RehydrateUS Initiative, which was launched Tuesday at Greenbuild in Phoenix, urges home and business owners to reduce their water consumption with 3 easy steps, including replacing existing toilets with ultra high efficiency toilets, and switching standard faucet aerators and showerheads with water efficient ones.

These 3 steps can reduce home and business water consumption by 30 to 60 percent, and can save 1 billion gallons of water per day across the country.

“The United States has an annual water deficit of about 3,700 billion gallons – meaning our nation is using 3,700 billion gallons more than is put back into aquifers, rivers, and lakes,” says Linstroth. “Buildings account for roughly 15 percent of that total … While agriculture and power production are the primary contributors to our nation’s water deficit, buildings are still responsible for a sizable portion. Additionally, while most people cannot influence how crops are irrigated, they can control how much water is used in their homes and businesses. And, that is what RehydrateUS is about – empowering people to affect change that is within their control – in this case their toilets, showerheads, and faucets.”

While changing out one toilet on its own may not seem to have substantial savings, it is the compounded effort that makes an enormous difference. For example, if the entire city of Phoenix was using low-flow plumbing fixtures, water consumption would be reduced by 20 billion gallons per year.

Additionally, water conservation is tied to economic and other environmental issues. For instance, conservation is the least expensive method to combat increasing demand. Plus, water conservation is tied directly into energy conservation and greenhouse gas emissions. On average, it takes 1 kWh to provide 1 gallon of water; thus saving 1 billion gallons of water reduces energy consumption by 1 billion kWh. This is due to how energy intensive it is to pump and treat water and the resulting wastewater. A decrease in water consumption, and thus energy consumption, therefore results in significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“While the RehydrateUS Initiative has an ambitious goal to reduce water consumption by 1 billion gallons per day, there is also a direct correlation to our nation’s energy supplies and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions,” says Linstroth. “Water efficiency is one of the cheapest ways to address all three of these environmental concerns in an extremely cost effective way.”
