ASHRAE Weighs Chiller Efficiency Change

12/28/2012 |

Update would bring major savings

A proposed addendum to ASHRAE 90.1 would increase the efficiency requirements for both air- and water-cooled chillers.

The proposed change would continue a gradual improvement in efficiency requirements that was implemented in 2010.

A path to compliance for part-load intensive water-cooled chillers would now include air-cooled chillers, and the efficiency requirements for water-cooled positive displacement and centrifugal chillers would be combined with available technology in mind.

These changes would increase annual energy savings to 23.1% over the 2004 version of the standard and 8.3% over the 2010 version.

If approved, the new requirements would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2015. To learn more, visit
