Earn different certifications at the schools in your area

Facilities management covers a vast area of work, and expertise in its different categories sometimes requires coursework and certification. There are several opportunities and resources in your area to pursue.

Baruch College in Manhattan offers certification in facility management after successful completion of four required and two elective courses. The classes cover topics such as operations, code compliance, and sustainability.

Hofstra University in Long Island offers a specialized course for school facilities management. Led by superintendents, business officials, and Board of Education members, the two-year certificate program focuses on the budgetary challenges and complex rules and regulations facing school leaders.

Pratt Institute in Brooklyn offers a master of science in facilities management degree program within its School of Architecture. It focuses on facility planning, design, and construction in addition to its operations, maintenance, and service. The coursework is designed to equip students with the technical as well as managerial skills necessary to be an effective FM.

The Department of Environmental Control Technology of the New York City College of Technology (commonly known as City Tech) offers a bachelor of technology degree in facilities management as well as more specialized certification programs such as building/housing superintendent and air conditioning or heating technician.

The New York Institute of Technology offers an advanced certification in facilities management as part of its master of science in energy management program. The certificate requires six courses that cover topics ranging from lighting and security to waste minimization and pollution prevention. The energy management degree is offered in response to the restructuring of the utility industry, the automation of building management systems, and increasing demand for energy services, all of which has caused unprecedented growth in energy management.

Whether your responsibilities cover architectural, operations, or energy concerns, these courses can help distinguish you as an expert in the ever-expanding field of facility management.
