The Midwest's first benchmarking city releases 2012 data

Top-performing individual buildings in Minneapolis include the Central Library with an EUI of 44.9 kBTU/square foot and two middle schools with 45 and 46 kBTU/square foot respectively.

Minneapolis, the seventh major U.S. metro to report results from energy benchmarking mandates, has released 2012 usage data for 102 publicly owned buildings.

Fifty percent of the buildings were eligible for an ENERGY STAR score. The average score was 52 for this group, which compares to a national average of 50. The median score of the group was 46. The results showed little correlation between building age and EUI (energy use intensity). Only 11% of the variability in EUI was attributed to age.

All commercial buildings in Minneapolis over 100,000 square feet are required to report data in 2014; in 2015, commercial buildings over 50,000 square feet will report.

Minneapolis is the first city in the Midwest to implement a benchmarking mandate. Chicago passed an ordinance last summer.
