Atlanta Nears Halfway Mark of Energy Goal

The city aims to slash 20% of its consumption by 2020

Atlanta, GA, is almost halfway to its goal of increasing energy and water efficiency by 20% by 2020. Participating facilities have achieved just over 9% in energy savings since 2011.

Atlanta is in the home stretch of its energy goal.

The bustling metro is participating in the DOE’s Better Buildings Challenge, which urges member cities to increase energy and water efficiency by 20% by 2020 in commercial, multifamily, and industrial buildings. Atlanta facilities representing more than 50 million square feet have achieved just over 9% in energy savings since 2011.

Atlanta’s strategies include monthly events where representatives of participating buildings can tour high-performance facilities and share best practices. City leaders also regularly organize local events to recognize participants’ progress, including the inaugural “State of the Challenge” event in June, where Mayor Kasim Reed honored all participants for their progress.

The Better Buildings Challenge was launched in 2011 and includes more than 190 participating organizations covering more than 3 billion square feet. So far, the buildings have achieved an average of 2.5% in energy savings each year, representing a savings of $300 million since the program launched.

Atlanta also recently joined the DOE’s Workplace Charging Challenge, which aims to increase the number of employers offering workplace charging for plug-in electric vehicles tenfold in the next five years.
