Comparative Building Costs: Repurposed Civic Buildings

Municipal Center

A historic building was renovated to accommodate village offices and conference space, village council chambers and an American Indian education center. The building was originally a Baptist church that later became a fire station. In its third life, the former sanctuary/fire truck bay is now an open-ceiling area with exposed hand-hewn wood trusses. The wood support for a former steeple is visible above the renovated building’s vestibule. LED fixtures are used throughout. High-efficiency glazing maximizes daylight in the building yet protects the education center’s exhibits from UV light.

Public Library

A vacant building formerly occupied by a billiard hall and a video store was purchased and renovated into a branch library with drive-up service, automated book check-in, children’s area, 21-station computer lab, laptop lounge/café, large meeting room and small group study rooms, and space for a future media studio. The 20,000-square-foot facility’s curved ceiling panels add dimension to the interior and provide acoustical control. The library’s collection numbers 350,000 items.
