3 Reasons to Focus on Energy Savings and Sustainability

Loading DockOver the years, it has been demonstrated just how much companies can benefit from converting their current incandescent or halogen bulbs to LEDs during a retrofit or new construction on the loading dock and inside the building.

And these trends and orders could not have come at a better time. Some estimate that supply chain and logistics operations represent 40 to 60%, even upwards of 75%, of a company’s energy usage and environmental footprint. The energy required to maintain competitive operations has lead companies to begin testing alternative methods to conserve energy from introducing intermodal strategies to retrofitting or designing facilities with energy efficient LED bulbs.

Saving Energy with Lighting Saves You Money

Historically, proper lighting on the dock and inside buildings was used to prevent injuries and damage to products, but there are now additional benefits companies are experiencing, such as lower energy bills.  Replacing standard incandescent bulbs with energy efficient, long lasting LED lights can make a significant difference in energy usage. Studies have suggested that switching out 100 incandescent lights with LEDs can save the average warehouse facility $100,000 over the life of the lights.

Saving Energy Reduces Your Carbon Footprint

Today, companies are finding themselves under more and more pressure to take preventive actions to reduce their carbon footprint. Utilizing energy efficient lighting sources, such as LED lights, is perhaps one of the easiest ways for organizations to cut down on their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

Manufacturers of these products have made it easier than ever to make the switch, by offering dozens of LED lights for just about any application that are just waiting to help reduce your carbon footprint, total building energy usage, and save on costs.

These can include:

  • Impactable LED lights for tough applications
  • LED Lights with flexible arms for optimal positioning
  • Portable LED lights for different areas of a building
  • Replacement lamps for current, broken or malfunctioning equipment

Bright and energy efficient, most 18-watt LED lights offer a 60,000 hour lamp life to help a facility save on energy and replacement costs.

Sustainability Is Here to Stay

Starting in 2010, MIT Sloan Management Review and The Boston Consulting Group began to document and examine the measures various companies were taking in regards to sustainability. In an article published in the MIT Sloan Management Review, sustainability was coined as a permanent element of many company agendas. The study also went on to further state that many companies are enjoying a profit as a direct result of sustainability efforts, which included using LED lights in industrial buildings.

A properly illuminated building and loading dock system can enable operations to achieve both peak energy efficiency and optimal logistics/transportation efficiency. And with more and more trends pointing toward increasing sustainability and energy efficiency, starting with small initiative such as replacing lights is a good place.
