The first clue that there may be an issue with the air or environmental quality in your building is usually complaints from occupants or staff. While it’s easy to brush off the concerns or only perform a cursory investigation into the issue, this tactic can have double unintended effects. If an issue is missed or the complaining individual feels as though their input isn’t important to the facilities team, morale can suffer.
It’s better to treat occupants as your eyes and ears in the building when it comes to IAQ complaints as they’re the ones who are in the best position to identify a problem early. Use their feedback to pinpoint problems before they become large, unwieldy, and expensive. Will you spend time on a few wild goose chases? Possibly, but that’s still preferable to missing an issue that could be dangerous.
