Building owners spend more than $6 billion annually just to light parking lots and garages, an often overlooked source of energy savings. A recent efficiency project cut energy use by a staggering 90% over the past year by targeting lighting efficiency across 270 million square feet of parking space.

The Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) campaign, a project of the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Alliance, partnered with more than 100 U.S. organizations to plan or install energy-efficient lighting in parking areas. The metal halide, fluorescent, and LED retrofits they chose will last up to three times longer than the original technology, and lighting control systems enable participants to reduce energy consumption when their parking facilities are not in use – in fact, the 12 top organizations alone will save nearly 45 million kWh and $4 million per year across their combined 500,000 parking spaces.
