2014 Green Building Standard Released

The new version of ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1 has been released, with the 2014 edition incorporating significant changes from the 2011 update. Drawing on contributions from collaborating agencies, the new standard incorporates additional mandates for site sustainability, water-use efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and the building’s impact on the atmosphere, materials, and resources. 

Significant differences in the 2014 edition include: 

1) Energy – Continuous air barrier requirements have been updated, as well as those regarding building envelope provisions and fenestration orientation.
2) Carbon dioxide emissions and renewables – Updates have been made to reflect changes in Standard 90.1, as well as the carbon dioxide emission factors for different energy sources.
3) Indoor environmental quality – The range of this section has been changed to include lighting quality. New guidelines have also been added for lighting controls, preoccupancy ventilation, and building envelope moisture management.
4) Site sustainability – Stormwater management requirements have been increased, while stipulations for bicycle parking and preferred parking for low-emission, hybrid, and electric vehicles are provided.
5) Water – Oversight of water use is now more stringent, including guidelines for toilets, clothes washers, dishwashers, and green roofs.
6) Impact on the atmosphere, materials, and resources – Recycling collection provisions have been updated for batteries and electronics, construction waste management, and life-cycle assessment. 

“Compliance with these updated provisions will help further reduce energy and environmental impacts through high performance building design, construction, and operation while providing indoor environments that support the activities of building occupants,” says Andrew Persily, chair of the Standard 189.1 committee.
