New IAQ Guidelines for Multifamily Facilities

ASHRAE revision will incorporate new developments, strategies to improve air quality

Multifamily facility

As more evidence is found about the real and continuing threat that poor indoor air quality can pose to occupants, ASHRAE is seeking public comment on a possible revision to Guideline 24-2008, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The guideline, which works as a companion to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2007, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings, provides more comprehensive information and strategy to achieve good IAQ than the code-intended standard.

The updated residential guideline will provide multifamily facility managers with tools to boost air quality, including information on envelope and system design, material selection, commissioning and installation, operations, and maintenance.

According to committee chair Paul Francisco, this is the first time since 2008 that the document will have been revised, and the new changes are designed to clarify previous guidance and include the most up-to-date IAQ information. The proposed amendments are open for public comment until May 11, 2015. For additional information or to comment on the changes, visit ASHRAE’s website
