ASHRAE Proposes Minimum Requirements for Green Certification

While there are many green rating systems for buildings such as LEED, Green Globes, and ENERGY STAR, they often have disparate requirements that can cause confusion for FMs. A new standard proposed by ASHRAE would establish minimum requirements for rating system content, allowing users to more easily manage factors that impact building ratings.

ASHRAE Standard 214P, Standard for Determining and Expressing Building Energy Performance in a Rating Program will help FMs assess what rating system is best for their building’s needs, as well as stay in compliance with benchmarking requirements. Areas that would be covered by the proposed standard include:

1) Disclosure of facility energy performance via rating labels and supporting documentation

2) Quantifying and expressing energy use with metered data of buildings and projects in progress

3) Proper application of credentialing requirements for individuals performing assessments and reporting facility energy use

4) Requirements for both design and post-occupancy conditions

5) The contents and design of rating disclosure, label, and documentation
