The EPA has announced awards for organizations taking part in its Food Recovery Challenge, with 29 participants honored for taking innovative action to reduce landfill waste and increase organizational sustainability. Included in the agency’s list of unique strategies are the creative re-use of food products, donating excess wholesome food to soup kitchens and food banks, composting and using wasted food to produce electricity.

The Challenge provides participants with tools, resources and support to help them establish baselines, set objectives for food waste reduction and track progress toward the goals. In 2014, almost 800 organizations took part in the Food Recovery Challenge, which helped divert nearly 606,000 tons of wasted food from landfills.
