State to focus on maintaining nuclear power, implementing new sources to reach goal

Solar panels and wind turbines

Under the direction of Governor Andrew Cuomo, the state of New York has announced that its State Department of Public Service will implement a new Clean Energy Standard that requires 50% of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. The new standard is expected to drive down the cost of clean power as well as create new opportunities to add large renewable energy projects in the state.

The standard will be supported by the State’s Reforming the Energy Vision program, which helps both state and private entities add renewables to their portfolios. Additionally, the governor has directed the Department of Public Service to create a plan that prevents nuclear power plants from being retired prematurely to help keep state electricity prices stable as well as maintaining fuel diversity.
