Standards to Improve Facade Inspections

Jan. 18, 2016

Guideline to standardize notation

A new standard has been created to standardize the notation, syntax and symbols used in building facade inspections. The E3036 Guide for Notating Facade Conditions in the Field standard from ASTM International provides a uniform method to use and understand common symbols for architects, engineers and building professionals. The standard will help eliminate the confusion that can come from reviewing inspection documentation from multiple firms using separate notation styles.

Another standard is being developed to harmonize the process for inspecting facility facades with camera-equipped drones. The WK52572 Guide for Visual Inspection of Building Facades Using Drones standard is expected to provide safety guidance, best practices for video-scanning building exteriors and advice for storing scan results for later analysis. The new guide comes as a result of the increase in drone use to inspect hard-to-reach building areas.
