Tool to Find Elevated Moisture in Buildings

Sept. 14, 2015

Questionnaires can help FMs find trouble spots.

To help FMs mitigate the risks of unwanted moisture in facilities, ASTM International has released a new guide with two questionnaires that assess elevated moisture levels and moisture-conducive conditions. As untreated moisture in buildings is associated with compromised occupant health as well as the risk of mold growth, the E3026 Guide for Readily Observable Moisture Affected Materials and Conditions Conducive to Elevated Moisture in Commercial Buildings: Visual Moisture Assessment Process can help building professionals perform inspections more thoroughly and keep occupants safe.

The standard is for building professionals conducting general assessments of facilities in areas such as maintenance, industrial hygiene, and architecture. Also included in the new guide is a checklist for individuals preparing moisture reports, as well as a template for interviewing property representatives.

“The new standard provides a practical baseline guide for evaluating not only the presence and causes of observed moisture, but also for documenting conditions that could lead to future moisture problems,” says ASTM member Jim E. Bartlett.
