It’s impossible to predict the future and its trends entirely, however it is worth it to see what way commercial building tech is heading. After taking a look at the annual Edison Awards, announced on April 20 in New York City in honor of Thomas Edison’s 170th birthday, it’s easy to see the future is bright.
The Edison Awards competition honors excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design and innovation. Presented at the Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels, the Awards symbolize the persistence and excellence personified by Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), who pioneered new product development methods and a systematic process of innovation.
Areas such as office technology, information technology and data security were addressed in the award nominations. Cutting edge Internet of Things applications were applied many different modules and solar was used to power more devices than ever before.

Taking home the gold were live finger print detection sensors that captures biometrics of a live finger by sensing pulses as blood flows, enhancing security.
In the Transportation & Logistics category, MULTI by thyssenkrupp AG took home the gold with its ground-breaking elevator that defies 160 years of rope-dependent elevators—replacing its ropes with linear motors.
For FMs looking to better treat industrial wastewater without chemical additions, another gold medal award winner, Diamox by Element Six, won the Environmental Quality category with its inventive on-site modular electrochemical cell.
