Montel Solves Trinity University’s Space Problems

April 26, 2006

Trinity University, located in San Antonio, TX, is one of the nation’s top private undergraduate institutions and draws students from across the country and the world. It is said that Trinity's Coates Library has approximately 1 million volumes plus instructional media services that include a multimedia development center and an information commons.

The Trinity University Elizabeth Huth Coates Library was continuously evolving; as a result, its library shelving became an important concern. Consequently, the library was facing major space problems, as their existing shelving was used to full capacity. “Before purchasing our powered (electrical) high-density mobile storage system, our growing volume of library Government Document collection was stored on static shelving,â€? said Jason L. Hardin, manager of access services.

With a growing volume of educational documentation, the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library was searching for an economic way to maximize its existing library space and incorporate the existing shelving into a high-density mobile solution. “When Trinity University was searching to purchase a high-density mobile storage system for the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library, safety and security features were important concerns during the buying process, explained Hardin. “In addition, vendor reputation was a key element for selecting a storage system manufacturer.

To help Trinity University improve its organization and optimize its library space, the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library incorporated its existing library shelving into Montel’s unique electrical Mobilex high-density mobile systems. By utilizing mobile shelving, the new electrical Mobilex systems occupied 62 percent of the previous library shelving’s space, which added an additional 520 square feet of space for needed library services and functions. “Montel’s electrical high-density mobile storage system improved the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library’s storage organization and made better use of space for different academic research activities in the library for the students and personnel, said Hardin.

Montel installed its state-of-the-art electrical Mobilex high-density mobile system with the following configurations:

  • Montel Aetnastak cantilever library shelving.
  • Motion detectors that sense any movement of the patron in an open aisle.
  • Floor-level infrared safety sweep.
  • Aisle entrance monitoring counter devise.

“Montel’s electrical high-density mobile storage system was very effective in consolidating storage of our library Government Document collection. We have no complaints for difficulty of usage of the system, mentioned Hardin. “The features we like the most from our Montel storage system are the functionality and user-friendly operations.
