It was the1840sand the Gold Rush was in full swing. Optimistic fortune seekers from across the country were streaming into California. Sacramento was a mecca for merchants selling everything from Levi’s to shovels and for settlers staking their claims along the neighboring foothills of the American River.  In April 1849, the population was estimated to be 150 and by October, the town census reported 6,000 - all male.  That same year, the first hotel was built.Today, Sacramento County ranks as the 10th fastest growing county in the nation. Old Sacramento, with 53 historic buildings and 28 acres is on the National Landmark registry. Each year, nearly 5 million visitors converge upon the area leaving little wonder why hotels are commanding a good share of the new construction activity.

The latest arrival to the community is the Embassy Suites. This 8-story, 242 room hotel flanks the Sacramento River and is within walking distance of Old-Town Sacramento and the Capitol Building. The hotel boasts the “newest kind of cool roof” in town – a Carlisle Sure-Weld white FleeceBACK Membrane Roofing System.  And its attributes are worth their weight in gold.

ENERGY STAR Ratings. Sure-Weld FleeceBACK white membranes meet ENERGY STAR performance guidelines and are backed by Carlisle’s Reflectivity Warranty. The warranty, based upon ENERGY STAR reflectivity criteria, ensures reflectivity values will be retained for a minimum of ten years.

VOC Compliance. FAST Adhesive, utilized in both insulation and membrane attachments, meets California’s stringent air-quality standards.

Wind Uplift Ratings.  This non-penetrating roof system provides the highest wind uplift ratings available for single-ply roofing installations.

Durability.  Sure-Weld FleeceBACK membranes provide enhanced puncture- and tear-resistance for projects with recurrent rooftop traffic.

FAST Installation. Tapered insulation was adhered to the structural concrete deck using FAST Adhesive to comply with specified slope requirements. Then, the industry’s only 12’ –wide, 100’-long, FleeceBACK membrane was adhered to the insulation using FAST Adhesive, Carlisle’s patented, low-rise, two-component expanding polyurethane foam. Seams were completed with the use of hot air robotic welding equipment.

“While a demanding roof design,” Commented Tim Tanner, Western Single Ply,  “this application was ideal for Carlisle’s Sure-Weld FleeceBACK System.  The challenges were minimized by support from Carlisle’s local Manufacturer’s Representative, Don Lambrecht.  Don helped us finish the job on time and on budget.”  Western Single Ply, Loomis, California, is an Authorized Applicator and a 4-year Carlisle ESP (Excellence in Single Ply) Member. Managing the construction and general contracting services was Swinerton & Walberg Builders, Oakland, California .

According to Don Lambrecht, “the installation was really slick. FAST Adhesive was spray-applied to the concrete deck and tapered insulation was set in place. FAST was again used - applied to the insulation - and the Sure-Weld FleeceBACK membrane was rolled into the wet adhesive.  Field seams were  then heat welded.  The system is efficient and just right for this application.”

Commented Ron Goodman, Carlisle’s Product Manager-FleeceBACK Roofing Systems, “unlike the accidental discovery of gold and the gold fever rush that followed, the development of Sure-Weld FleeceBACK membranes was systematic, thoroughly-researched and perfectly timed.  Conditions were perfect. The system addresses owners demanding their roof systems deliver energy efficient life-cycle cost savings. Communities with environmental mandates  welcome these TPO membranes because they are produced without harmful plasticizers or chlorine. And Carlisle’s low VOC FAST Adhesive addresses California’s air quality standards and contractor installation efficiencies. Carlisle has again, delivered the gold.”
