Carlisle, PA-When NBC 10, located on City Line Avenue in Philadelphia, decided to undertake a 47,000 square-foot reroofing project, the news station employees had one request -QUIET ON THE SET. NBC 10, known in eastern Pennsylvania for thorough and timely coverage of local, national and international news, was faced with a major roofing dilemma. Atop the three-story building was a 20-year-old coal tar pitch roof that had been repeatedly patched. After struggling with the high-maintenance and costly existing roof for years, NBC 10's facility manager decided it was time to install a new roof. Although a new roof was inevitable, the quandary facing the roofing decision-makers was how to replace the existing roof with a durable system without compromising the integrity of the noise-sensitive studios below. "We were looking for a low-maintenance, durable membrane roofing system that was non-intrusive and virtually odor-free," said Jeff Delaney, NBC 10 facility manager. "It was important to us that the project would not disrupt our team of professionals during live broadcasts."
After reviewing various options, NBC 10 chose Carlisle SynTec's FleeceBACK Membrane Roofing System for its minimal noise- and odor- levels and for its durability. Unlike other systems that require mechanical fasteners, FleeceBACK membrane is adhered with an extra strong, VOC-free FAST Adhesive: a two-component, expanding construction-grade adhesive which is spray-applied to attach both insulation and membrane. The membrane consists of a non-woven fleece backing laminated to EPDM membrane and provides 100- to 115- mils of consistent thickness resulting in flexibility, durability and weatherability. United States Roofing Corporation, a Carlisle Hall of Fame and ESP authorized applicator, was chosen for the job. "The FleeceBACK System was the most cost-effective and practical long-term solution for NBC 10," said Ryan Tyrrell, sales manager. "And the non-penetrating application prevented us from generating unwanted noise during business operating hours." While the actual installation of the new roofing system occurred during regular production hours, the tear-off of the existing roof had to take place at night. US Roofing began their work at the conclusion of the 11 o'clock news and worked until 8 a.m. each day until finished. "The US Roofing team did an incredible job," said Delaney. "They realized the sensitivity involved with our circumstances and were extremely accommodating." After completing the tear off, the deck was sprayed with FAST Adhesive and polyisocyanurate insulation was set in place. FAST Adhesive was then sprayed onto the insulation to adhere the FleeceBACK membrane. After rolling the membrane sheets, the overlapping edges were secured with Carlisle's SecurTAPE (seam fastening tape).
