In the real estate industry and other industries all across the country, retiring baby boomers are paving the way for a new, younger segment of the U.S. to move into their office.
Jobs in the commercial real estate industry are likely to be filled by a group that is a generation younger, rather than just a few years younger.
According to consulting firm CEL & Associates, more than half of building and asset managers working today will be gone within a decade. And concerns are rising. The quality of building and facility operations may be impacted negatively by a depleted workforce if recruits are slow to arise or if the new wave of workers are underprepared.
To combat an impending workplace deficit, Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of San Francisco, alongside BOMA Oakland/East Bay, IREM San Francisco and NAIOP San Francisco Bay Area, have created a model, multi-dimensional program to address the industry’s HR crisis.
Working under the banner of the Commercial Real Estate Alliance for Tomorrow’s Employees (CREATE), the aforementioned real estate trade groups are fully funding an ambitious new outreach program, designed to recruit and train future real estate leaders.
Launched in September 2017, the new two-semester Commercial Real Estate Fellows Program at San Francisco State University builds upon the success of the industry’s Commercial Real Estate Certificate Program, which began in 2012. The new Fellows program targets all 6,000 students in the SF State College of Business.
The one-year program prepares students to be job-ready in the commercial real estate market, and runs two semesters from September 2017 to May 2018.
