ENERGY STAR Tackles UPS Certification

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) can now earn the ENERGY STAR certification for energy efficiency under a new specification.

UPS products that meet the requirements use an average of 35% less energy than standard models, though this percentage varies by size and other characteristics.

Certifiable systems range from small units for individual computers up to products for large data centers that can support instant backup power for thousands of servers and other equipment.

Because UPS systems are always on, the potential for energy and cost savings is significant.

Roughly 25-50% of the purchase price is recoverable over the product’s lifetime, according to EPA estimates.

Look for the blue ENERGY STAR mark on UPS systems starting Aug. 1. The EPA will add the newly certified products to its online database at that time.
