With 11,000 real estate and facilities management employees, and another 53,000 employees dedicated to building efficiency, this global leader is best known as a provider of products and services that optimize energy use and improve comfort and security. When it acquired York Intl. (a global supplier of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration [HVAC&R] equipment and services) late last year, the combined business was estimated to serve customers in 125 countries from over 700 locations. More importantly, the complementary capabilities of the two businesses afford an opportunity for real technology innovation - the possibilities of true building integration and efficiency that could reshape the way we operate buildings today.
In keeping with this technology opportunity and advancement, Johnson Controls has expanded its existing global facilities management contracts as well. According to Guy Holden, vice president and general manager, global real estate and facility management solutions at Johnson Controls, “Increasingly, customers want to bridge the gap between real estate and facilities management with an integrated offering more aligned to business needs. We have responded by developing a full range of real estate services, which complement our facility management, technical, and business support services.” As a result, Johnson Controls recently created Integrated Real Estate and Facilities Management Solutions, which offers a single source for real estate portfolio management, design and project management, and strategic consulting, as well as energy and facilities management. In mid-2005, the company acquired USI Cos. Inc., a leading U.S. corporate real estate alliance services firm, to accomplish this goal and has since offered such expanded offerings to a number of clients, including Agilent Technologies and the BBC.
Perhaps true recognition, however, has come from the government sector. Earlier this year, President George W. Bush visited the Milwaukee, WI, headquarters of Johnson Controls to raise public awareness of the need for America’s energy independence and to highlight some of the latest technology advances in energy efficiency. Clearly, he selected one of the most appropriate innovators for this venue.
