FastTalk: Partnering with an Old Friend

July 31, 2006

In the second issue of Buildings magazine’s operation (in 1906, as The Building Manager and Owner), the editors and publishers announced to the industry “a plea for organization. These are the days of consolidation and organization. Each day brings us a message from some part of the country telling of the organization of a new local or state or national association perfected by the men in some trade or profession. They may be organized for the purpose of promoting good fellowship among the followers of a particular profession, or for the interchange of ideas, or for protection against a common enemy, or to elevate and dignify the profession and raise it to a higher standard.” By the October 1907 issue, the magazine reported: “Building managers in every section of the country have approved of the idea of forming a national organization of building managers”; by year’s end, the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) became a national organization.

Based in Washington, D.C., BOMA Intl. ( is now an international federation of more than 90 local associations and affiliated organizations. BOMA’s 19,000-plus members own or manage more than 9 billion square feet of commercial properties in North America and abroad. Its mission is to enhance the human, intellectual, and physical assets of the commercial real estate industry through advocacy, education, research, standards, and information.

One century after the formation of Buildings and BOMA - and with just as many years of cooperation and mutual admiration under their respective belts - Buildings and BOMA Intl. recently announced the formation of an alliance to own, manage, and promote The Office Building Show, beginning with the 2007 trade show in New York City (which is held in conjunction with the North American Commercial Real Estate Congress®, also known as The BOMA Congress).

During The 2006 BOMA Congress and The Office Building Show, held in late June in Dallas, David W. Hewett, outgoing BOMA Intl. chairman and chief elected officer (as well as principal at Trammell Crow Co., Auburn Hills, MI), said, “I am very pleased with this new alliance between BOMA Intl. and Buildings magazine. This alliance leverages BOMA’s strong marketplace brand with the No. 1 publication serving commercial real estate.”

Buildings Publisher Tony Dellamaria agrees: “This is an important acquisition and alliance for the Buildings brand, as it enhances our strategic position as the leading resource for commercial building owners and facilities managers in print, online, and - now, even more so - in person.”

This combined event featuring educational programs, networking opportunities, and a diverse, hands-on exhibition is your opportunity to plan success strategies for tomorrow’s challenges. Mark your calendars for July 21-24, 2007, for The BOMA Congress and The Office Building Show at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. Join us, and make a difference in your organization.
